During the vibrant days of summer, Purl Jam had the opportunity to organize knitting workshops at Maison Chance (Bình Tân District), where nearly 80 elementary school students were introduced to knitting needles and colorful strands of yarn for the very first time. From their first slightly clumsy stitches, the children gradually created small pieces of their own, along with plenty of laughter and many memorable moments.
Three Months of Patience and Discovery
When Purl Jam first brought the idea of knitting classes to Maison Chance, we did not fully know what to expect. For many of the children, knitting was a completely new experience. The small knitting needles, soft skeins of yarn, and repetitive stitches seemed simple, but they were quite challenging during the first few sessions.
In the beginning, we spent a lot of time guiding the children step by step. Some held the needles awkwardly, while others struggled with their very first stitch. What surprised us the most, however, was their patience and curiosity. The children were not afraid to try again and again, to ask questions, or to laugh when their stitches slipped and they had to start over.
When a Skein of Yarn Becomes Joy
After a few weeks, small changes began to appear. The stitches became more even, and the children’s hands slowly grew familiar with the rhythm of knitting. Some of them started completing their first small creations – perhaps a simple knitted square or a small keychain. But for us, the most meaningful part was not the finished product. It was the excitement in their eyes when they saw something they had made with their own hands. Some proudly showed their pieces to friends, while others carefully placed them in their school bags like little treasures. Moments like these reminded us that sometimes a simple creative activity can bring an incredible amount of joy.
The Human Values We Received
Three months passed more quickly than we expected. The knitting sessions were not only about teaching a skill – they also became moments for conversation, listening, and connection.Purl Jam came to Maison Chance hoping to bring a creative activity to the children. Yet along the way, we realized that the children also gave us something meaningful in return. Their patience, innocence, and simple joy reminded us why this project matters. The small stitches created at Maison Chance did more than form handmade pieces – they also wove together memories that will remain very special to all of us at Purl Jam.
